Black-and-white Warbler female building nest on ground, photo, Jefferson National Forest, Virginia, 2010
This female Black-and-white Warbler is engaged in building a nest. In this photo the female has finished incorporating a load of nest material and is looking around as she prepares to fly away to fetch another load. The Black-and-white Warbler nests on the ground and this nest was well-concealed both by surrounding vegetation and its integration into the background of leaf litter. The male did not participate in nest building but periodically brought the female food.
