Copan Mayan Ruins Photo

Altar L  Photo -  a view looking north to the Great Plaza from atop a raised terrace at the north end of the Ballcourt

Altar L commemorates the Accession of Ukit Took', the Last King in Copan, on February 10, 822.

On the left is Ukit Took' and on the right is his predecessor, Yax Pasaj Chan Yoaat, each king seated on his own name glyph.

The south side of Altar L is the only face that was completed owing to the demise, not long after, of central authority at Copan.
