Copan Photo - Mayan Ruins

This Spherical Altar is set in front of Stela 4 in the Great Plaza and is in the form of a Rubber Ball such as used in the ballgame. The sphere is encircled by what appears to be a Rope. It has been suggested that this depicts rope that was used to hang the rubber ball when not used so as to maintain its roundness. This altar features a rounded depression in the center from each side of which grooves curve downward to the rope.
